BUNIONS | 02 Footwear Essentials

What are Bunions?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the joint at the base of your big toe. It occurs when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place. This causes the tip of your big toe to get pulled toward the smaller toes and forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out. The skin over the bunion might be red and sore.

What are the causes of Bunions?

It’s a combination of factors like family history, abnormal bone structure, increased motion and shoe choice can cause them.

The most common causes of Bunions are:

  • Wearing narrow or pointed shoes that crowd your toes
  • Heredity - people with flat feet or other unique foot shapes or structure are more likely to develop bunions
  • The way you walk.
  • Health conditions that cause inflammation (like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus).
  • Standing for a long time or working on your feet.

What are the percentage of people with Bunions?

More than 25% of people worldwide have bunions—and the deformity, which is particularly prevalent among older people, is more likely to affect women than men.

How to choose the right shoes if you have Bunions?

  • Use stretchy materials

Buy shoes that are made from a stretchy material, such as leather or canvas, so that there is some room for your bunions.

  • Wear flats and avoid heels

Steep high heels often have cramped and narrow cuttings. The angle of the heel also places your body weight onto the balls of your feet. This puts a lot of stress on the bunions.

  • Use light shoes

Light shoes can put less pressure and weight on your bunions, so that you can wear them for longer periods of time without getting uncomfortable.

  • Use breatheable material

Breathable material is key, allowing your skin to breathe and stop moisture from building in your shoes that could irritate your skin and bunions.

When should I be concerned about my bunions?

If bunion pain persists despite treatments and progresses to become very severe or impair mobility, your doctor may recommend surgery.
